Etymology
First attested as brontegum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Brantgum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Brant (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hem (“home, settlement”). Compare Mantgum and Tjeintgum.
