Bräitchemann

Luxembourgish

Etymology

From Middle High German briutegome, from Proto-West Germanic *brūdigomō. The form yielded older Luxembourgish *Bräidigem, (contracted) *Bräitchem. Compare obsolete Bräitchen m (bridegroom). Folk etymology then reformed or enhanced this as Braut (bride) + -chen (diminutive suffix) + Mann (man).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈbʀæˑɪ̯t͡ɕəˌmɑn]
