First attested as bonrepas in 1254. Compound of Old French bon (good) and repast (meal). The toponym was coined in ecclesiastical circles to lure settlers to the area. Compare Kockengen, Koekange, Kudelstaart, Schoonebeek, Schoonoord and Wijngaarden.
