First attested as apelderloe and apeldorenloe in 1313. Compound of Old Dutch *apuldra (apple tree) and lo (light forest on sandy soil). The name has no connection to Old Dutch *apa (river, current). Compare Apeldoorn, Appeltern, Ter Apel, Apuldram, Apeldorn and Appeldorn.
