Etymology
First attested as apelderloe and apeldorenloe in 1313. Compound of Old Dutch *apuldra (“apple tree”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). The name has no connection to Old Dutch *apa (“river, current”). Compare Apeldoorn, Appeltern, Ter Apel, Apuldram, Apeldorn and Appeldorn.
