From the Latin annō Hegirae (“in the year of the Hijra”), from annō (“in the year”) (the ablative of annus (“year”)) + Hegirae (“of the Hijra”) (genitive of Hegira (“the Hijra”)). Formed in imitation of the Christian Anno Domini.
