Etymology
Introduced as a genus name by Abraham Gagnebin in 1755, rarely circulating before as a transcription of the Arabic حَاج (ḥāj) or more specifically vulgar pronunciation of its singulative, with prepended article, الْحَاجَة (al-ḥāja), this plant name deriving from Aramaic חָגָּה / ܚ̈ܵܓܸܐ (ḥāggā, “Alhagi”), from Akkadian 𒂊𒄖𒌋 (egû, a thorny plant, possibly Alhagi).
