Ahvenanmaa
Finnish
Etymology
Unclear; one theory derives the name from Proto-Norse ᚨᚺᚹᚨᛚᚨᚾᛞ (ahwaland, “water-land”), the first part of which the Finnic peoples would have associated with ahven (“perch”). According to the same theory the Swedish name of the islands, Åland, would come from the same origin.
Another theory, proposed by Schalin (2008), is that the word was originally borrowed from early Proto-Germanic *agwiōz (“archipelago”) into Proto-Finnic as *ahvëh or *ahvë- and then re-borrowed back into Proto-Norse as [script needed] (ahwē) or [script needed] (ahwe), which would later become *ā- in Old Swedish *āland > Swedish Åland.
