Potentially attested as ascet in 1302, attested with certainty as AFSCHED of Asched, ook wel Afzet in 1839. If the oldest attestations refer to the current settlement, the toponym is a derivation from Old Dutch askethe (“ash (Fraxinus excelsior) forest”).
