From Ancient Greek ἀετός (aetós, eagle) + χθόνιος (khthónios, buried, underworld) + -ος (-os). Literally, eagle killer. From a species of it, Aetokthonos hydrillicola, being identified as the source of a toxin, aetokthonotoxin, killing eagles.
