Aardenburg
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as rodenburgh in 966. Compound of an unclear first element and burg (“fortified settlement, castle”). The first element may be a Celtic hydronym *Rodana, rood (“red”), or a term derived from the Latin governmental designation pagus Rodanis. The first element was gradually reinterpreted as aarden (“earthen”). Compare Roomburg, Rotenburg an der Fulda and Rodborough.
