Borrowed from Old East Slavic -ница (-nica) (as in words such as Russian больница (bolʹnica, hospital)).[1] Doublet of -niece.

  1. Added to nouns and adjectives to derive nouns of places and also some objects (usually "collections of" something), related to (e.g., useful for) the meaning of the original noun.
