Etymology

From Middle High German -hūsen, from Old High German -hūsum, dative plural of hūs (“house”). It is found in native High German placenames as well as in adapted forms of originally Low German or Frisian placenames.

Pronunciation

IPA^(key): /ˈhaʊ̯zən/, /ˌhaʊ̯zən/
As with several other placename suffixes (e.g. -hagen, -hofen, -kirchen) it is unpredictable whether -hausen takes primary stress or not. It predominantly does when the name has four or more syllables (but not universally, cf. Oberhausen).
