-gli

Italian

Pronoun

-gli

  1. (enclitic) Alternative form of gli
dare (to give)dargli (to give for him; to give for them)
vendere (to sell)vendergli (to sell to him; to sell to them)
servire (to serve)servirgli (to serve to him; to serve to them)

Usage notes

  • Appended to present active infinitive verb forms to derive dative forms when the object is third singular masculine or third plural person. The final -e of the original infinitive is removed :
-are-argli
-ere-ergli
-ire-irgli

Where the verb ends in -rre, the final re is removed, leaving behind just an -r:

introdurre (to introduce; to insert)introdurgli (to insert in him; to insert in them)

In any case, after the suffixation, there is only a single r and no vowels immediately before -gli.
