Suffix

-enként

  1. (distributive suffix) Added to a noun.
    1. Expressing the manner when something happens to each member of a set one by one.
      fej (head) + -enkéntfejenként (per head)
      eset (case) + -enkéntesetenként (in some case)
    2. Expressing the frequency in time.
      tíz perc (ten minutes) + -enkénttízpercenként (every ten minutes)
      hét (week) + -enkénthetenként (once a week)
      év (year) + -enkéntévenként (annually, yearly)

Usage notes

  • (distributive suffix) Variants:
    -nként is added to nouns ending in a vowel. Final -a changes to -á-. Final -e changes to -é-.
    óra (hour) + -nkéntóránként (every hour)
    este (evening, night) + -nkéntesténként (every evening, nightly)
    -anként is added to some back-vowel nouns ending in a consonant
    ház (house) + -ankéntházanként (per house)
    -onként is added to most back-vowel nouns ending in a consonant
    asztal (table) + -onkéntasztalonként (per table)
    -enként is added to unrounded (and some rounded) front-vowel nouns ending in a consonant
    fej (head) + -enkéntfejenként (per head)
    könyv (book) + -enkéntkönyvenként (per book)
    -önként is added to most rounded front-vowel nouns ending in a consonant
    bőrönd (suitcase) + -önkéntbőröndönként (per suitcase)
It can be supplemented with the suffix -i to form adjectives specifying the frequency of an event, e.g. hetenkénti rendszerességgel (“every week”, literally, “with the regularity of a week”), synonymous with heti rendszerességgel or simply hetenként, hetente. It can also form adjectives expressing application for every piece, e.g. a csomagonkénti díj (“the fee for individual items of baggage”).
