Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἆθλον (âthlon), largely via English.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /atlɔn/

Suffix

-athlon c

  1. -athlon

Usage notes

  • Only used in reference to biathlons and triathlons. For competitions with more than three events, compounds of a numeral and kamp are used instead. For example, a quadrathlon is not known as a *kvadrathlon, but as a fyrkamp.
  • SAOL, published in 2015, recommends the spelling -atlon,[1][2] but -athlon remains the dominant form. Both are pronounced the same.
