Etymology

Inherited from Early Assamese -অস (-oso), from Magadhi Prakrit -𑀅𑀰𑀺 (-aśi), from Sanskrit -অসি (-asi). Cognate with Kamta -ইস (-ix), -ইত (-it), Rajbanshi -इत, Bengali -ইস (-iś), Sylheti -ꠅꠍ (-osó), -ꠅꠔ (-ot), Bishnupriya Manipuri -অত, Rohingya -s.

  1. Used to form the second-person informal present tense of verbs.

Usage notes

In written Assamese, the spelling of this suffix depends on the ending sound of the verb stem. If it ends with a consonant then no suffix is written, though some may use the vowel marker ’ (o) to prevent ambiguity. If the verb stem ends with o, a and u, then -ৱ (-wo) suffix is written (eg, খাৱ (kha-o, “you consume”). If the verb stem ends with -i then -য় (-yo) suffix is written, (eg, দিয় (di-o, “you give”).
