  1. Used to form adjectives from nouns; -y.
    зима́ (zymá) + -овий (-ovyj)зимо́вий (zymóvyj)

Usage notes

  • If the noun's stem is hard, -овий is used (зимо́ви́й (zymóvýj), ка́ловий (kálovyj), ярови́й (jarovýj))
  • If the noun's stem is soft, the following rules apply:
    • -евий and -євий are used if the stress falls on the adjective's stem (including the suffixal part -ев)
    • -овий and -ьовий are used if the stress falls on the adjective's ending (masculine nominative -и́й)
      • -овий is used after hushing sibilants (борщови́й (borščovýj), біржови́й (biržovýj)) and /j/ (крайови́й (krajovýj))
      • -ьовий is used otherwise (життьови́й (žyttʹovýj), польови́й (polʹovýj))
