-бище
Russian
Etymology
Generalized from nouns ending in -ба́ (-bá) to which -ище (-išče) had been added. Compare стрельба́ (strelʹbá, “shooting”) + -ище (-išče) → стре́льбище (strélʹbišče, “shooting range”), later reinterpreted as стреля́ть (streljátʹ) + -бище (-bišče); similarly with мо́льбище (mólʹbišče, “prayer ground”), originally derived from мольба́ (molʹbá, “entreaty, prayer”).
