From Proto-Tai *ɓlɯənᴬ (moon; month). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯᩮᩬᩥᩁ, Lao ເດືອນ (dư̄an), ᦵᦡᦲᧃ (ḋoen), Shan လိူၼ် (lǒen), Thai เดือน (dʉʉan), Bouyei ndianl, Zhuang ndwen or mbwen, Saek เบรี๋ยน. Compare also Proto-Austronesian *bulaN (whence Malay bulan).
