Inherited from Proto-Turkic *küntüŕ (“daytime, morning; noon”), equivalent to 𐰚𐰇𐰤 (kün, “day; sun”) + 𐱅𐰔 (-tüz). Cognate with Chuvash кӑнтӑр (kănt̬ăr), Turkish gündüz (“daytime, morning”), Uzbek kunduz, Bashkir көндөҙ (köndöź), Yakut күнүс (künüs).
