Etymology

Disputed. Seemingly cognate with Latin ostendō (β€œto show”), maintaining the literal sense of obs- (β€œforeward”) +β€Ž tendō (β€œstretch”).[1][2] By some connected with Proto-Italic *tolnō, hence a formation parallel to Latin offerō (β€œto offer”), perfect stem obtul-.[2][3]
