First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄒᆞᄫᆞᅀᅡ (Yale: hoWoza). Cognate with 한 (han, “one”), 홀로 (hollo, “alone”).
