From Middle Korean 요ᄉᆞ이 (yoso.i). First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 요ᄉᆞᅀᅵ (Yale: yosozi), a compound of (yo, this) + ᄉᆞᅀᅵ (sozi, space between).
