First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 싸홈〮 (Yale: ssàhwóm). Substantive form of 싸우— (ssau-, “to fight”), formed with the suffix —ㅁ (-m).
