널빤지
Korean
Etymology
First attested in the Yeogeo yuhaebo (譯語類解補 / 역어유해보), 1775, as Early Modern Korean 널판ᄌᆞ (Yale: nelphanco). From 널 (neol, “board, plank”) and 반지 (板子, banji, “board”). Modern reflex of the latter: 판자 (板子, panja, “board”).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈnɘ(ː)ɭp͈a̠ɲd͡ʑi]
- Phonetic hangul: [널(ː)빤지]
- Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
