Inherited from Old Javanese tamba, tambā (“cure, remedy, medicine”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tambar (“antidote”) (compare Malay tawar (“tasteless”), Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tambal (“to mend, to patch”)).
