Shift from Old Japanese verb 黄葉つ (momitu → momitsu), from 四段活用 (yodan katsuyō, quadrigrade conjugation) to 上二段活用 (kami nidan katsuyō, upper bigrade conjugation) in Middle Japanese.[1][2]
