(ぎゃく)(せつ) • (gyakusetsu) 

  1. (grammar) adversative, contrastive; a particle or conjunction that joins two phrases and indicates that their meanings contrast or differ from one another or from expectation
    • 1991, Michio Ōnishi, Tansakubun no jugyō [Short-essay instruction], page 108:
      記述(きじゅつ)(りょう)がふえてきている。逆接(ぎゃくせつ)順接(じゅんせつ)接続(せつぞく)助詞(じょし)使用(しよう)目立(めだ)つ。
      Kijutsu ryō ga fuetekiteiru. Gyakusetsu to junsetsu no setsuzoku joshi no shiyō ga medatsu.
      There is increasing description. The use of contrastive and resultative particles is noteable.
