短冊 (tanzaku): small and colorful strips of paper hung onto small trees during the Tanabata festival

Compound of Middle Chinese-derived elements 短 (tan, “short”) +‎ 冊 (saku, “writable object”).

The saku changes to zaku as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

1. a small strip of paper that can be written on, especially those hung on bamboo or other trees during Tanabata
2. a vertical card in which Japanese poetry (waka, haiku, etc.) can be written on
3. a thin strip of cloth before the middle perforation of, for example, a cuff
4. Synonym of スリップ (surippu): a transliteration of the English word 'slip'
5. (historical, colloquial) Synonym of 一分金 (ichibukin) a rectangular gold coin worth one 分 (bu, one-fourth of a ryō)
