Etymology

From the 連体形 (rentaikei, attributive form) of Early Middle Japanese adjective 歯痒し (hagayushi), with the medial /-k-/ falling out. Compound of (ha, tooth) + 痒い (kayui, itchy). The kayui changes to gayui as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
