Etymology

Phono-semantic matching, adapted from the earlier 尼池 (níchí) [1950s], a pure phonetic transcription from Tibetan ཉིང་ཁྲི (nying khri, the local name for Nyingchi). The renaming was influenced by 靈芝灵芝 (língzhī), a specialty from the Nyingchi area.

Tibetan ཉིང་ཁྲི (nying khri) is a variant of ཉང་ཁྲི (nyang khri, Nyingchi), a name derived from ཉང (nyang, a Tibetan clan living near the Nyang River (尼洋河)) and ཁྲི (khri, a Tibetan clan (living in the lower reaches of the Nyang River?)) (Agui, 2012).
