trad. (揚子江) | 揚子 | 江 | |
simp. (扬子江) | 扬子 | 江 |
Etymology
From 揚子/扬子 (Yángzǐ) (for "Yangzhou" directly or for a nearby ferry named "Yangzi") + 江 (jiāng, “(major) river”). Its false etymology as "Son of the Ocean" stems from the homophonic misnomer 洋子江.
Pronunciation
Proper noun
揚子江
- (obsolete) the stretch of the Yangtze River between its mouth and Nanjing, near the formerly-important port of Yangzhou
- Yangtze River
Usage notes
In Chinese, the name 長江/长江 (Cháng Jiāng) is overwhelmingly more common. To the extent 揚子江 is employed in modern usage, it is typically translating names or phrases from foreign languages, where variations on it became standard for the entire river.
