Etymology

Compound of 意趣 (ishu, grudge) + 返し (kaeshi, a returning, a return, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 返す (kaesu, to return something)).[1][2][3][4] The kaeshi changes to gaeshi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited in a text from 1711.[1]
