Etymology
From 倫理 (rinri, “ethic”) + 学 (-gaku, “-logy; -graphy”), coined by Japanese philosopher Inoue Tetsujirō in 1881 in his work 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, “Dictionary of Philosophy”) as a calque of English ethics, based on the phrases 樂者,通倫理者也 in the Book of Rites (《禮記》) and 正倫理,篤恩義 in 《近思錄》.[1][2][3]
