Etymology

From (りん)() (rinri, ethic) + (がく) (-gaku, -logy; -graphy), coined by Japanese philosopher Inoue Tetsujirō in 1881 in his work 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, Dictionary of Philosophy) as a calque of English ethics, based on the phrases 樂者,通倫理者也 in the Book of Rites (禮記) and 正倫理,篤恩義 in 近思錄.[1][2][3]
