伊犁

(伊犁)

Etymology

Borrowed from Manchu ᡳᠯᡳ (ili), from Written Oirat ᡅᠯᡅ (ili).

Further etymology is not clear. In the Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, compiled in the 11th century, the toponym is recorded as اِلا and glossed as the name of a river. 伊麗 (MC 'jij lje|lejH) and 伊列 (MC 'jij ljet), older Chinese translations of the name of the river, are attested in the Tongdian [801 CE] and the Old Book of Tang [945 CE].
