Etymology

Literally a compound of (kushi, skewer) + (saba, mackerel).

A second sense arose out of a kind of pronunciation spelling, punning off of the slang senses of (kushi, proxy) from a clipping of プロクシー (purokushī, proxy), and (saba, server) as a sort of rebus of サーバー (sābā, server).

Pronunciation

  • (Tokyo) しさば [kùshísábá] (Heiban – [0])
  • IPA(key): [kɯ̟ᵝɕisa̠ba̠]

Noun

(くし)(さば) • (kushisaba)

  1. (food) a mackerel skewer, usually grilled
  2. (slang, computing) a proxy server
Synonyms: プロクシ (purokushi), プロキシ (purokishi), プロクシサーバー (purokushi sābā), (kushi)
