In North Korea, the letter is called 된기윽 (doen'gieuk, “strong ㄱ (g)”). In South Korea, it is called 쌍기역 (雙—, ssanggiyeok, “doubled ㄱ (g)”).

In Dongguk Jeong'un (東國正韻), this letter was used to transcribe voiced velar plosive ([ɡ]) of Middle Chinese.
