From Old Japanese, from Proto-Japonic *noka. The kanji spelling 粳 has been used to phonetically spell nuka in the Man'yōshū of 759 CE, as in 雨毛落粳 (AME2=mo PUR-An-u=ka, “the rain doesn't fall?”) (Omodaka 1967, p. 552).
