Etymology

Compound of (su, mat or screen made of reed or bamboo) + 垂れ (tare, hanging down, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 垂れる (tareru, to hang down)).[1][2][3][4][5] The tare changes to dare as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First attested in the Man'yōshū of 759.[1]
