From Proto-Ryukyuan *soza, *seza, from Proto-Japonic *sosa. Cognate with Yaeyama しじゃ (shija), Yonaguni すだ (suda), Kikai しだ (shida), Kunigami しじゃー (shijā), Northern Amami-Oshima せざ (seza), Okinawan しーじゃ (shīja).
