"Tree-wilter", 木(こ) (ko) + 枯(か)らし (karashi, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 枯(か)らす (karasu).). The karashi changes to garashi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
