Usage notes

This diacritic should only be used when a dedicated character does not exist. The following characters are not canonically equivalent to the base letters plus ◌̢.

A vowel letter with a hook tail is now typically the allophone of a vowel next to a retroflex consonant, but historically these letters were used for rhotic vowels.
