Etymology

Sound word without etymology. Note the formal similarity with ῥόθος (rhóthos, rushing noise), ῥοῖβδος (rhoîbdos, rushing noise) and ῥοῖζος (rhoîzos, whistling sound). The medial -χθ- may be compared with μόχθος (mókhthos, toil, trouble), βρόχθος (brókhthos, throat) and ὀχθέω (okhthéō, to be troubled, angered).
