ὀστρύα
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ὀστρυΐς (ostruḯs), ὀστρύς (ostrús)
Etymology
Frisk compares ὄστρεον (óstreon, “bivalve”) but the semantics are weak. Heubeck and Neumann suggest a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the enlargements in "-ύα", "-υΐς" and "-ύς".
