ἕκηλος
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἕκᾱλος (hékālos) — Doric
Etymology
Uncertain. The word is best taken, as per Buttmann, as *ϝέκᾱλος (*wékālos) (which is identical to γέκαλον (gékalon, “quiet, reposeful”)), from *ϝέκᾰ (*wéka) in ἑκάεργος (hekáergos), so from Proto-Indo-European *weḱ- (“to wish, want”). Thus, it would probably mean "at will". The semantically attractive connection with Sanskrit उच्यति (ucyati, “to find pleasure”) and ओकस् (okas, “abode, dwelling”) would be fine for εὔκηλος (eúkēlos), but does not explain this word.
