From Proto-Tai *krwɯːᴬ (“ear”). Cognate with Thai หู (hǔu), Lao ຫູ (hū), Lü ᦠᦴ (ḣuu), Shan ႁူ (hǔu), Tai Dam ꪬꪴ, Tai Nüa ᥞᥧᥴ (hú), Aiton ꩭူ (hū), Ahom 𑜍𑜥 (rū), Zhuang rwz. Compare Proto-Kra *k.raᴬ and Sui kkal.
