From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀdɛːŋᴬ³ (“red”), from Proto-Tai *C̥.dwiːŋᴬ (“red”). Cognate with Thai แดง (dɛɛng), Northern Thai ᨯᩯ᩠ᨦ, Lao ແດງ (dǣng), Shan လႅင် (lěng), Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥒ (laeng), Tai Dam ꪵꪒꪉ, Ahom 𑜓𑜢𑜂𑜫 (diṅ) or 𑜃𑜢𑜂𑜫 (niṅ), Zhuang nding, Nong Zhuang ndiang, Saek รี๋ง.
