From a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic 𐰶𐰃𐱃𐰪 (Qïtań, Khitan), from Khitan 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún, Khitan). Cognate with Old East Slavic Китай (Kitaj), Russian Кита́й (Kitáj), Kyrgyz Кытай (Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай (Qıtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý and Chinese 契丹 (Qìdān), English Cathay.
