មាត់

Khmer

Etymology

From Old Khmer mat (mouth, maw; face), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *mat (eye). Cognate with Northern Khmer เมื็อด. Compare Juang tɔmɔɖ. The current meaning is a development from "face", which is itself derived from "eye", the root's original meaning. Compare Vietnamese mặt (face) and mắt (eye).
