ខាង
Khmer
Etymology
Derived from កាង (kaang, “to extend to the side”) with infixed -h-. Compare similar derivation in ឃាំង (khĕəng, “to obstruct”) from គាំង (kĕəng, “to be stuck”). Possibly related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟkaiŋ (“side, edge”), Tampuan kɛɛŋ (“side”), Eastern Lawa kaŋ (“side, to spread”), Thavung cakɛ̀ːŋ/cakhɛ̀ːŋ (“to lean to one side, side”). See also similar forms in Tai, including ข้าง (kâang, “side”).
